Privacy Policy

FareEstimate compares what a ride is likely to cost across Uber, Lyft, taxis and self-driving services. You do not need an account to use it. This page explains what we collect when you visit, which outside services are involved, and the choices you have.

What we collect

Trips you price

When you compare a trip, the places you type are sent to Mapbox, our mapping provider, to find the addresses and work out the route. We keep a record of the trip so we can improve our estimates: the pickup and drop-off points rounded to roughly half a mile, the distance, the time, and the prices we showed. That record is not tied to your name, your email address or your device.

Your approximate location

The home page uses the general area your connection comes from, as estimated by our hosting network, to suggest popular trips near you. We do not store it, and we do not ask your device for its precise location.

Things you send us

  • Contact messages: your email address and what you write.
  • Problem reports: what you tell us, the page you were on, and your email address if you choose to give it.
  • Prices you were quoted: the service and the price, if you choose to tell us what an app actually charged.
  • Launch alerts: your email address and the city you want to hear about.

Our own visit counts

We count page views and a few actions ourselves: tapping a booking button, copying a promo code, following a promo link, and leaving for another site. With each one we record the page, the site you came from, your country and whether you are on a phone, tablet or computer. To tell one visitor from another within a single day, we create a short code from your IP address and browser type. The code changes every day, so it cannot follow you from one day to the next, and we do not store your IP address.

Analytics services we use

We also use services from other companies to understand how the site is used. Each one collects information directly from your browser, such as your IP address, your browser and device, the pages you view and how you move through them.

  • Google Analytics measures visits and how people use the site. See how Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can install Google's opt-out add-on to stop Google Analytics in your browser.
  • Google Tag Manager loads the other measurement tools on this list. It does not collect information about you for its own analysis.
  • Clicky measures visits in real time. See Clicky's privacy policy, or opt out of Clicky on every site that uses it.
  • Microsoft Clarity shows us how people interact with our pages through clicks, scrolling and mouse movement, including heatmaps and replays of individual visits. We use it to find and fix parts of the site that are confusing. Microsoft may also use this information for its own purposes, including advertising, as described in the Microsoft Privacy Statement.

Cookies

Cookies are small files a site stores in your browser. FareEstimate uses cookies and similar browser storage to remember your preferences and recent trips, to keep the site working as expected, and to measure how it is used. The analytics services above set their own cookies so they can recognise a returning browser. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings. Most of the site will keep working if you do, though it may not remember your choices.

Other companies that help run the site

  • Cloudflare hosts the site and, like any host, sees your IP address when your browser connects. See Cloudflare's privacy policy.
  • Mapbox provides address search, routes and maps. It receives the places you search for and, where a map is shown, your IP address. See Mapbox's privacy policy.
  • Supabase stores our database, including the records described above. See Supabase's privacy policy.
  • Google Fonts supplies the typeface, so your browser contacts Google to load it. See Google's privacy policy.

Ride companies and promo offers

A booking button opens the ride company's own app or site with your pickup and drop-off already filled in, so that company receives those two places. Our promo pages contain referral links, and we may receive a credit or payment when you sign up through one. Once you leave FareEstimate, the company you go to handles your information under its own privacy policy.

How we use information

  • To show you estimates, and to make them more accurate over time.
  • To understand which pages and features are useful and fix the ones that are not.
  • To reply when you contact us, and to act on the problems you report.
  • To email you about a self-driving launch, if you asked us to.
  • To keep the site secure and to meet legal obligations.

Sharing

We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with the companies named on this page, so they can provide their services to us, and when the law requires us to.

Your choices

  • You can use the site without giving us your name or email address.
  • You can block cookies in your browser, and opt out of Google Analytics and Clicky with the links above.
  • You can ask us to delete a message, a report or an email address you gave us. Use the contact form and tell us which address it was sent from.

Keeping information safe

We limit who can reach the information we hold and keep it with established providers. No website can promise perfect security, so please do not send us anything sensitive through the contact form.

Visitors outside the United States

FareEstimate is run from the United States and covers rides in US cities. If you visit from elsewhere, your information is processed in the United States.

Children

FareEstimate is not meant for anyone under 18, and we do not knowingly collect information from children. If you believe a child has sent us information, tell us and we will delete it.

Changes to this policy

When we change how we handle information, we will update this page and the date at the top.
