What drivers receive
The city's records also show what the driver was paid for each trip. In August 2026, on the middle half of trips, drivers received roughly 65–95% of the fare with Uber and 65–85% with Lyft. In August 2025 the ranges were 60–90% and 70–85%.
Driver pay excludes tips and tolls; the fare excludes taxes and surcharges. The share varies widely from trip to trip, which is why this is given as a range. New York sets a minimum pay standard for drivers, so these figures do not describe other cities.
How the index is made
- Source. The New York City Taxi and Limousine Commission's High Volume For-Hire Vehicle trip records, which list every Uber and Lyft trip with its fare, distance and duration.
- Standard trip. For each company and month we fit fare against distance and time across all trips, then read off the price of a 5-mile, 20-minute ride. Surge and promotions are in the fares as charged.
- Left out. Shared rides, trips under half a mile or over 40 miles, trips under 2 minutes or over 2 hours, and fares under $4 or over $400.
- Limits. This is a New York City index. No other large US city publishes trip-level fares by company, so it should not be read as a national figure.
